New Report Reveals Unpaid Carers Being Pushed Out of Work
A major new report published by Carers UK has shed important light on the pressures facing unpaid carers across the country — findings that resonate deeply with the people we support here at Carers Together.
The report, The ‘Tipping Point’: When Unpaid Carers Can No Longer Combine Caring with Paid Employment, supported by Standard Life, paints a stark picture of the intersecting challenges that are forcing carers out of the workforce. Drawing on responses from more than 10,500 carers through the State of Caring 2025 survey, alongside in-depth interviews, the research reveals that nearly half of all working carers — 47% — are considering reducing their hours or leaving paid employment altogether.
Carers described a combination of pressures driving them to this breaking point: inflexible workplaces, the physical and emotional exhaustion of juggling care with a job, and a lack of affordable, reliable social care. For many, continuing to work simply becomes impossible.
The report calls for:
- A cross-government Carers Action Plan — a fully funded, strategic approach to supporting carers
- A statutory right to paid Carer’s Leave — so carers are not penalised financially for their caring responsibilities
- Strengthened employer support — ensuring workplaces are flexible and carer-friendly
- Investment in social care and NHS support — so carers are not left without the services they and their loved ones depend on
