Young Adult Carers Survey January – February 2021

Carers Together and The Junction would like to know how best to identify and support young adult carers aged 15-25.

A group of young adult carers have talked to us about the things that have helped them and about what else can be done.

One of their suggestions is that there should be a Transitions Project/Service for young adult carers to support them during the moves from school to college, university or work or between services eg Health or Social Care.

Please can you help us to prioritise their suggestions by ranking them in each of the boxes from 1 to 7, where 1 is the ‘most helpful’.

A Transitions Project/Service for young adult carers should:

1.
Provide a range of information and support services for young adult carers aged 15-25, including individual emotional support sessions; weekly support calls; peer support sessions; crisis support and information sessions eg about benefits and other services.

2.
Employ Specialist Link Workers who will provide information and support, will help young adult carers to connect to other services and activities and will provide access to peer support sessions with other young adult carers.

3.
Deliver a programme of life skills sessions for young adult carers, face to face and online, to include communication; relationships; confidence building; cooking; finances and budgeting; First Aid.

4.
Develop a Young Carers Passport, which can be shared with staff in schools, further and higher education, work places, Social Care and Health Services.

5.
Work with education and Health Services to ensure that they use their record keeping systems to identify young adult carers.

6.
Deliver training about young adult carers and the impact of their caring role, for staff in education, Health and Social Care services.

7.
Deliver an annual PHSE lesson for all school pupils about the roles of young carers of all ages and about the impact of their caring role.

We will use the feedback from this survey to improve the support available for young adult carers.
