Our Story

In March 2000 Redcar and Cleveland Council held a consultation day with carers to identify what support they needed to enable them to continue their caring roles.

Carers wanted a central point of contact for information and support and in response, the council launched a project to work with a carers planning group to identify appropriate carers’ services.

The project consulted with carers and partnership agencies to find out what services were required and identified the following carers' needs:

  • to be recognised and valued
  • accessible up to date relevant information
  • emotional and social support
  • a voice in the planning of services
  • participation and involvement with an independent organisation
  • involvement in the planning of services for the people they care for
  • to maintain their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of the person they care for

As a result, the project supported a group of carers to form Carers Together in Redcar and Cleveland, an independent, constituted organisation that obtained charitable status in March 2003 and became a limited company in November 2008.

In April 2013 we became Carers Together Foundation and extended our area of benefit outside of Redcar and Cleveland.

We are governed by a Board of Trustees, including carers and former carers, and our services are delivered by a skilled and experienced team of staff and volunteers.

Carers Together is an organisation that puts carers first.
